Farmers & Merchants Bank is proud to be an independent community bank. The bank was chartered on April 15, 1908, as a state chartered bank in Timberville, VA and is the oldest banking business native to Rockingham County, VA.
“1908-1912: Newspapers shortened the cumbersome name on the charter from “Farmers & Merchants Bank of Timberville, Incorporated” to “Farmers & Merchants Bank,” but more often townspeople simply and affectionately referred to “The Bank.” And they referred often and sometimes slipped into “our bank.” For a sense of ownership imbued them all- from the child with a ten-cents-a-week savings account to the stockholders whose holdings increased more than 550 percent in the bank's first eight months. During that beginning period, capital grew from an initial $10,000 to $66,229.”
