You may be aware of a pervasive telephone scam that involves individuals posing as the IRS and targeting taxpayers throughout the country. We’ve learned this scam has now made its way to the Valley. Thanks to one of our customers for reporting this to us after a family member was recently targeted.

How It Happened
Our customer’s family member received a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS. He told her she had committed tax fraud in 2010 and owed $4,000, of which $1,800 had to be paid immediately or she would be arrested. Since, according to the scammer, the victim’s bank account had already been frozen by the IRS, they would not accept a check, only a wire to a specific address.  When the target told the scammer she was going to contact the Sheriff’s department, he threatened her and told her she could not bring a third party into it or she would be arrested.

The target traveled to her nearby branch to find that her account was in fact not frozen.  She then went to her Sheriff’s department to report the incident.  While she was there she received another phone call from the scammer, this time it was from a local area code.  When she told the officer what number it was coming from, he recognized the number as coming from one of his own officers and said that it couldn’t be him because he knew where he was. The officer she was talking to took the phone to talk to the scammer, but he hung up.  Somehow the scammer made it look like they were calling from the Sheriff’s department.

This is a scam you may have seen on the news recently, and just as described in other instances, this incidence has now occurred locally. The IRS believe the calls are originating in Europe and advises that they will never place a call to collect funds.
